CSU falls at Presbyterian in Big South opener

Clinton, S.C. – Charleston Southern fell on Tuesday night at Presbyterian 3-1 in the Big South Conference opener for both teams. Kalysia Bates led CSU with 15 kills, while Kylie Klein had 13 kills. Madison Martin led the Bucs defensively with 20 digs.

CSU falls to 5-10 overall, 0-1 in Big South play following the loss, while Presbyterian improves to 4-9 overall, 1-0 in Big South action with the win.

Hannah Western had a kill in the first set to give the Bucs a 6-3 lead. Presbyterian tied the match 11-11 following a kill by Allie Wright and extended its lead to 19-14 after a kill by Erin Eulitz. The Blue Hose led 23-17, but six straight points by CSU tied the match. The teams traded points until an attack error by Klein gave PC the win in the first set 26-24.

Charleston Southern got off to a fast start in the second set and took a 5-3 lead on a kill by Rachel Smith. The Blue Hose then scored five straight points to gain an 8-5 advantage. CSU led 15-12 on a kill by Klein and had its lead grow to 22-16 following a service ace by Macey LaPorte. The Bucs closed the set on a kill by Bates to give CSU a 25-18 win and tie the match 1-1.

Presbyterian jumped to an early lead in the third set and led 9-7 after a kill by Eulitz. CSU bounced back and took a 20-16 lead on a kill by Deona Mims. The Blue Hose then won eight of the next nine points to take a 24-21 lead. The Bucs closed the score to 24-23, but PC had a kill by Allie Wright to win the set.

The Blue Hose led 8-6 in the fourth set and scored six straight points to take a 14-6 lead on a service ace by Daley Gosnell. CSU closed the score to 17-11 after a kill by Bates. Presbyterian's lead grew to 22-12 following a service ace by Wright and PC cruised from there to win the set 25-16 and the match.
