CSU picks up two wins in Elon Tournament

ELON, N.C. – Charleston Southern picked up two wins on Saturday at the Elon Phoenix Classic. The Bucs defeated Norfolk State 3-1 before taking down N.C. Central 3-1 later in the afternoon.

Charleston Southern (3-8) never trailed in the opening two sets on its way to a 3-1 win over Norfolk State (2-4) at Alumni Gym. Kalysia Bates paced the Bucs offensively with nine kills while Madison Martin led the team defensively with 17 digs. 

CSU jumped out to an early 10-6 lead following a kill from Hannah Western. The teams were tied 15-15 before the Bucs scored 10 of the final 12 points to close out the set. 

A kill by Addison Kaderli gave CSU a 10-6 lead in set two. CSU led 22-15 following a serve from Macey LaPorte that wasn't returned by the Spartans. Another kill by Kaderli gave the Bucs a 25-19 win in the second set.

Norfolk State responded with a strong third set and took a 10-6 lead after a kill by Lexi Brown. CSU cut the margin to 13-12, but the Spartans were persistent and led 22-18 before scoring the final three points to win the third set 25-18.

Charleston Southern bounced back in the fourth set and took an 11-5 lead that was extended to 19-10 following a kill by Kylie Klein. The Bucs scored six of the final 10 points to secure the set and win the match.

CSU scored the final six points of the match as it defeated N.C. Central 3-1 on Saturday in the Elon Phoenix Classic. Addison Kaderli led the Bucs offensively with 16 kills while Madison Martin led the defensive effort with 22 digs.

A back-and-forth opening set had several lead changes and a tight score until the end when CSU took a 28-26 win on back-to-back kills by Kaderli.

Charleston Southern controlled the second set by hitting .444. The Bucs lead grew to double digits as soon as 16-6 before NCCU trimmed the score to 20-13. CSU won five of the last six points to close out the set with a 25-14 win.

CSU led in the third set 16-13 and the Buccaneers continued to lead 23-21 before the Lady Eagles scored the final four points to take a 25-23 win and cut the match score to 2-1.

The Bucs used a 7-0 run in the fourth set to gain a 13-6 advantage over NCCU. Charleston Southern cruised from there and led 19-12 before scoring the final six points to close the match and seal the win.

Hannah Western and Kalysia Bates were named to the all-tournament team for CSU while Elon's Kam Terry was named the Tournament MVP. Also named to the all-tournament team were Elon's Sydney Busa and Kodi Garcia. Norfolk State's Hope Forsythe and N.C. Central's Da'Nesha Miller also received all-tournament team nods.

CSU returns to action when it travels to play at The Citadel Tournament in Charleston, S.C. next weekend on September 15-16. The Bucs will face Alabama A&M on Friday before taking on Jacksonville St. and The Citadel on Saturday.
