Volleyball caps off CSU Saturday home sweep with 3-1 win over S.C. State

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Addison Kaderli led the Buccaneers with 15 kills as Charleston Southern topped visiting S.C. State on Saturday afternoon in the Buc Dome in four sets, 23-25, 25-22, 25-21, 25-17.

The Bucs, in their first home game since September 1, fell in the first set, but rallied back over the final three frames to capture the win and cap off a perfect 3-0 day for CSU at home. The Buccaneers' football team topped Monmouth, 37-7, earlier in the afternoon, while the CSU women's soccer team topped Francis Marion, 2-1, on a rare day when all three programs competed on CSU's campus.

Krista Kuglin added 11 kills to the CSU (5-15) offense, while Katrina Houston had 10 kills over the final three frames as the Buccaneers combined to hit .154 from the floor as a team. Brooke Green completed the double-double for CSU with 22 assists and 10 digs, while Cassidy Greer added 21 assists and nine digs from the floor. Madison Martin led CSU with 20 digs from the backline, while Ashley Higginbothem had 19 as the Bucs limited S.C. State to a .071 hitting percentage in the match.

Brianna Dafney had a team-high 11 kills for the Bulldogs (2-12), while Melanie Williams finished the match with 35 assists. Marcella Chestnut was the team's defensive leader with 24 digs. S.C. State combined for 10 blocks as a team in the match with Kirby Anderson and Kiana Stone leading the way with three apiece.

S.C. State held control throughout a majority of the first set with the Bulldogs building a five point lead at 22-17 following an Anderson service ace. The Buccaneers rallied back with four straight points sparked by back-to-back kills from Kaderli and Connor Malone, but the CSU comeback fell just short as the Bulldogs took the first set.

Sparked by Houston's seven kills in the second set, the Bucs took an 18-13 lead over the Bulldogs. S.C. State battled back with a 6-1 run capped by another Anderson ace to cut the margin down to one. Kaderli connected on a kill to end the run and Parrott had a solo block as the Bucs closed out the set to even the score at 1-1 as the teams headed into the break.

A 7-2 run midway through the third set gave the Bucs a 19-12 lead with Kuglin putting three kills in during the stretch. The Bulldogs brought the set all the way back to 22-21 on a solo block by Marissa Lawrence, but CSU recorded the final three points to take the 2-1 lead on the 25-21 set win.

The fourth set was all Bucs as CSU led from start to finish in closing out the win. With the score in favor of CSU 13-11, the Bucs went on a 7-2 run on Higginbothem's serve to take control of the frame and Green closed out the final two points of the match on service aces as the Bucs took the 25-17 victory.

CSU is back in action on Tuesday night as the Buccaneers host Campbell inside the Buc Dome. First serve on the Big South Network is set for 6 p.m.
