CSU falls to Tennessee State to close out UC Invitational

CINCINNATI, OHIO - Charleston Southern dropped a three-set decision on Saturday afternoon to close out the UC Invitational this weekend, falling to Tennessee State 25-21, 25-22, 25-21 inside Fifth Third Arena.

Siraya Windsor led the Buccaneers with 16 kills on the afternoon as CSU hit .255 on the day in the match, while Meredith Parrott was also in double-digits with 11 kills. Cassidy Greer had 29 assists to set up the CSU offense, while Taylor Allman was in double-digits with 10 digs to lead the Bucs defensive efforts. Connor Malone led CSU at the net with two blocks.

Taylor Swayzer led TSU on the afternoon with 17 kills as the Tigers hit .289 from the floor as a team. Naomi Wells added 16 kills and eight digs, while Arijana Anderson had 12 kills in the victory. Defensively, Jaime Cooper had 12 digs, while Madison Halterman was also in double-digits with 10 digs.

Charleston Southern falls to 5-9 overall with the loss, while Tennessee State improves to 5-8 with the win.

TSU took the 9-4 lead in the first set, utilizing a 7-2 run paced by two Taylor Patterson service aces to take a lead they would not relinquish in the frame. The Bucs would rally all the way back in bringing the match to with two points late at 23-21 following a Parrott kill, but back-to-back TSU points gave the Tigers the first set win.

The second set featured 16 ties and seven lead changes in the match as neither team was able to separate themselves by more than four points at 15-11 when Tennessee State went up following three consecutive Swayzer kills. The Bucs responded with four straight points to tie the match back up at 15-15. CSU took the narrow lead late at 22-21 following kills by Windsor and Katrina Houston, but the Tigers rallied to take the final four points of the set in taking the win.

With the third set tied 20-20, Tennessee State recorded five of the final six points to take the last frame and complete the sweep.

The Bucs return home this week as CSU hosts Savannah State on Tuesday night inside the Buc Dome. First serve against the Tigers is set for 7 p.m.
