Bucs open weekend at Weems Baskin and ADIDAS Winthrop Invitationals

CHARLESTON, S.C. - Charleston Southern took on the fields at both the Weems Baskin Invitational and the ADIDAS Winthrop Invitational on Friday as the Buccaneers split up the team between the two events hosted by the University of South Carolina and Winthrop.

The jumpers and throwers took on the competition at the Sheila & Morris Cregger Track on the campus of USC on Friday as the teams competed against the deep fields. The distance teams, paced by the efforts of Lydia Frierson and Matt Inman, battled against the opposition at the Irwin Belk Track.

Micah Deveaux placed 35th in the men's open long jump event at the Weems Baskin Invitational. His first attempt of 5.76m was his mark for the day in the field.

Milan Williams placed third overall in the women's hammer throw at the Weems Baskin Invitational. The sophomore thrower connected on a throw of 50.71m in her fourth attempt to lead the Bucs in the event.

JP Caglione led the Bucs in the men's hammer throw on Friday afternoon. Caglione's first throw of 49.16m placed him fourth overall in the field. Ryan Spiecha was seventh with a throw of 45.47m in his third attempt of the day. Seth Wolfe placed 16th (42.28m) and Clarence Moss was 23rd (37.32m) in the field.

Haley Newell led the Bucs in the women's javelin throw event on Friday afternoon. Newell's first throw sailed 27.41m for her lone mark of the day placing her 23rd in the field in the event.

Lydia Frierson led CSU's efforts in the women's 5000m race as the Bucs took on the field at the ADIDAS Winthrop Invitational. Frierson crossed the line eighth overall with a time of 18:10.84. Taylor Barnes was 27th in 19:35.64, while Bethany Thornhill was 29th in 19:41.43.

Matt Inman paced four Bucs in the men's 5000m race to close out the first day of the Winthrop Invitational. Inman placed second overall in the field with a time of 15:03.51 to pace the group as all four athletes placed in the top 12 in the deep field. Adam Huff was seventh in 15:15.39, while Trevor Dominy was one back in eighth in 15:19.59. Hayden Alexander was 11th overall with a time of 15:28.67.
