Williams wins weight throw at Clemson Invitational in Indoor Track & Field season opener

CLEMSON, S.C. - Milan Williams took the individual title in the weight throw event and finished fourth overall in the shot put to pace Charleston Southern in their season opener at the Clemson Invitational on Saturday.

Williams paced the field with a winning distance of 16.11 meters to pace the field and win the individual championships. She topped South Carolina's Kierstin Williams (16.09m) and Gardner-Webb's Petra Jakelijic (15.71m) with the longest throw of the day.

Alexus Foreman and Milan Williams had a strong showing in the shot put with Foreman finishing third overall with a distance of 13.46m on the afternoon. Williams finished right behind with a distance of 11.87m taking fourth in the field. Freshmen Madison McCoy and Areale Frazier finished 10th and 11th respectively with throws of 10.51m and 10.48m in the event.

Foreman (12.92m) and McCoy (12.79m) finished 11th and 12th overall in the weight throw.

Jasmine Pilgrim advanced through the prelims in the 60-meter dash to place eighth overall in the finals. She turned in a time of 7.75 to lead the Bucs in the event. TeJyrica Robinson (7.77) and Aluntrea Davis (7.81) finished ninth and 10th overall in the event.

Kolisha Coleman led the Bucs in the 200-meter dash with the senior sprinter placing eighth among the field with a time of 25.40. Alexis Adams finished 15th overall, crossing the line with a time of 26.25.

Danielle Burnett was the top Buccaneer finisher in the 400-meter dash, placing eighth overall with a time of 56.79. Gabriella Steffen crossed the line with a time of 1:06.50 to finish 16th overall in the field.

Traci Drayton led the Bucs in the 500-meter run with a time of 1:24.50, narrowly beating out teammate Nina Massie to finish ninth in the field. Massie crossed the line one one-hundredth of a second behind at 1:24.51 to place 10th.

Sophomore Bethany Thornhill paced CSU's distance efforts in the 5000-meter run, placing 15th overall in the field. She crossed the line in 20:51.99 to lead the Bucs in the event.

Robinson led four Bucs in the 60-meter hurdles, advancing through the preliminary rounds to finish seventh overall with a time of 8.75. Caroline Edmondson (9.03, 13th), Destinie Little (9.61, 17th), and Areale Frazier (9.91, 20th) also took on the field in the event.

CSU took sixth overall in the 4x400-meter relay with the team of Adams, Burnett, Davis, and Coleman finishing with a time of 4:01.66.

Edmond was CSU's top finisher in the high jump in placing seventh overall among the field. The freshman jumped 1.60m to pace the Bucs.

Victoria Gibson was the Bucs' top competitor in the long jump, placing ninth overall with a distance of 5.29m.

Charleston Southern is back in action next weekend at the Wake Forest Invitational on Saturday, January 21, in Winston-Salem, N.C.
