Campbell rallies past CSU to eliminate Bucs from Big South Tournament

BUIES CREEK, N.C. - Sidney Doherty put Charleston Southern on top early, but Campbell scored the final two goals including the game winner in the 81st minute to eliminate the Buccaneers from the Big South Tournament.

The loss ends CSU's season with a 9-6-2 record while the Camels improve to 7-10-1 and head to Matthews, N.C., for a semifinal matchup with top-seeded Radford on Friday.

How It Happened

  • Campbell had the first good scoring opportunity, but a header by Alexa Genas hit the post in the 15th minute
  • Four minutes later, Doherty put the Bucs in front when she took a pass through the box from Peyton Motley and left-footed it in
  • The goal was Doherty's fourth of the season to give her solo possession of the team lead 
  • The Bucs held the advantage for 20 minutes before the Camels tied it before intermission
  • McKenna De Graff's shot was saved by Jazmin Gonzalez, but Rosie O'Neal collected the rebound and scored to make it 1-1
  • CSU had a chance to go ahead in the 63rd minute, but a free kick by Motley from just outside the box sailed high
  • In the 81st minute, the Bucs were unable to clear the ball after a corner kick and Genas put it in the lower right corner 
  • The Bucs had one last chance in the closing seconds when an open look by Kat Klingensmith went right right
