NINETY SIX, S.C. – Charleston Southern topped UNC Asheville, 3-2, in its final match Tuesday at the Blue Hose Match Play at The Patriot at Grand Harbor. The Bucs' victory allowed them to finish seventh overall.
USC Upstate claimed the team title by edging Gardner-Webb, 3-2. All three of the Spartans' triumphs required at least 17 holes, with two of the three coming down to No. 18. Radford placed third thanks to a convincing 4-1 win over host Presbyterian.
Freshman Ellen Hume continued to lead CSU, as she defeated Asheville's Taylor Hinson 2&1 to complete the tournament a perfect 3-0. Senior Andriel Aimua captured her second straight win with a 5&3 victory over Baylee Evans. Sophomore Daniela Intriago collected the deciding victory for coach Matt Cram-Smith's Bucs, downing Janie Thomas 3&2.
"It was a much better day today and it was great to see the girls take advantage of a new round," Cram-Smith said. "Ellen played great again and Andriel and Daniela were in control of their matches all day."
"The main takeaway is it gave our new players a great chance to see the course that will host the Big South Championship in April," Cram-Smith continued. "The match play format also showed us where we are with our mental games and what needs improving. We're turning our focus on to Turtle Point, where we'll get to practice this week, so we're looking forward to it."
CSU will wrap up its fall campaign this Sunday-Tuesday at the Palmetto Intercollegiate, hosted by College of Charleston at Kiawah Island's Turtle Point Golf Club.
