COLUMBIA, S.C. – Charleston Southern senior Jared Watkins won the high jump to lead the Bucs at Saturday's Gamecock Invitational, hosted by the University of South Carolina.
Watkins jumped 2.05 meters, just .02 meters off his best distance from last season, to pace the field and enter the Big South Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships with momentum.
CSU freshman sprinter Josiah Scarlett provided one of the other highlights for coach Roosevelt Lofton's Bucs, running the 800-meter in 2:11.48 to finish as runner-up. He was just .31 seconds off the top spot.
Fellow freshman Josh Paramore placed third in the prelims of the 55-meter to earn a finals spot among the field of 26 athletes. He crossed the finish line in 6.46 seconds in the prelims, and then matched it to finish fourth in the finals.
CSU heads to Blacksburg, Va. next Friday and Saturday for the Big South Indoor Track & Field Championships.
