KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. – Charleston Southern junior Brandon Smith recorded his third top-20 finish this fall to lead the Bucs to a T-13th place showing Tuesday at the East Bay Deli Classic at Turtle Point Golf Club. Smith tied for 16th in the field of 117 players.
College of Charleston posted a four-under par 284 final round to claim the team title at -3 overall. The Cougars edged Memphis, who took the lead for part of the day, by three shots. Augusta, USC Upstate and Radford rounded out the top-five. Memphis's Isaiah Jackson and CofC's Christian Baliker shared medalist honors at -7 overall. Baliker shot the low round of the day, a five-under 67, to tie Jackson.
Smith capped a strong first semester at CSU with a 74 on Tuesday. He birdied both par-five's on the front nine as part of a stretch of three birdies in four holes.
Elliot Gothe (T-35th) was the Bucs' other top finisher overall, despite a third round 77. Sophomore Connor Moore (T-64th) delivered CSU's best round of the day with a level par 72 highlighted by three birdies. Freshman Brandon McBride chipped in a 74 as well for coach Jason Payne's Bucs.
CSU earned victories over Big South Conference foes Gardner-Webb and Hampton, and finished narrowly behind High Point, Presbyterian and Winthrop.
The Bucs will open their spring season Feb. 26-27 at the Wexford Intercollegiate, hosted by Francis Marion in Hilton Head.
