CHARLESTON, S.C. – Freshman righty RJ Petit added another weekly Big South award to his mantle taking home Freshman of the Week honors, as announced Monday by the conference office.
In the Bucs' series-opening win at UNC Asheville, Petit slammed the door on the Bulldog offense allowing just one baserunner across 3.0 scoreless innings while striking out four to collect a win out of the bullpen. His effort allowed the Bucs to stay within striking distance before pushing two runs across in the ninth for a 3-2 win before taking the series later in the day.
The accolade is the second for the freshman from Rock Hill, S.C., who was named the Big South's Relief Pitcher of the Week April 1 after a save at High Point. Petit's latest award is also the fifth weekly recognition from the conference office joining fellow freshman Kyle Horton and juniors Seth Owens and Javon Martin.
Petit also extended his scoreless inning streak to 14.1 since moving to the backend of the Buccaneer bullpen. Petit has also picked up a pair of wins and four saves since taking over the role while collecting 22 strikeouts to just three walks.
Petit and the Bucs take on Palmetto State foe South Carolina Tuesday in their final contest before an exam break in a neutral site affair from SRP Park in North Augusta, S.C.
